To compare two mixes fairly, play the same musical passage at similar perceived loudness, switch between versions, and listen for one specific improvement. Turn down the louder version before judging clarity, bass, or impact. Decide what the revision should improve
Write the reason for version B before playing it: clearer chorus words, more distinct bass notes, or stronger drum attacks. Better is too broad. A brighter mix can make the words clearer while also making the cymbals tiring; name both the improvement and its cost.
Keep version A unchanged. Give the files neutral labels and record what changed in a separate note. If possible, hide which file is newer while listening so the label does not guide your choice.
Prepare passages that answer the same question
Put both files in your audio editor and align their musical starts. For two mixes of the same performance, use identical excerpt boundaries, silence, and fade lengths. Comparing a quiet intro with a full chorus will skew the average-level comparison.
- Vocal passage: a complete line with consonants, a sustained word, and accompaniment underneath.
- Busy passage: the chorus or section where bass, drums, and lead compete.
- Exposed passage: a sparse verse, transition, or ending where noise and edit problems are easy to hear.
Two AI-generated takes may have different melodies, instruments, or section lengths. Compare equivalent musical moments for a creative choice, but do not call that a controlled test of one mixing change. Decide which performance you want first; otherwise a different arrangement can be mistaken for improved processing.
Use Music Analyzer for a rough level reference
- Export the matching excerpts from your audio editor as separate working files.
- Open Music Analyzer and choose the first file with Browse. Analysis runs on your device.
- Write down its filename, Duration, and Loudness reading, including the minus sign and dBFS unit.
- Choose Reset, then Browse to analyze the second excerpt. Save your first reading in your own note before resetting.
- Check that both readings describe the intended passages. The tool handles one file at a time; it does not play or compare the pair for you.
The Loudness card reports RMS level in dBFS: an average signal-level measurement. A value closer to zero indicates a higher measured level. RMS is not LUFS, a perceptual loudness measure, and equal RMS values do not guarantee equal perceived loudness. Use the difference as a starting adjustment, not a final match or delivery target.
The analyzer combines the channels into mono for its readings. Changes to stereo width or phase can therefore change the measurement even when the stereo versions do not sound that far apart. If stereo processing is the main difference, use a stereo-aware loudness meter in your editor and judge the original stereo playback. This page does not provide stereo loudness matching or true-peak metering.
Match playback before judging the sound
Return to the audio editor. Keep your speaker or headphone volume at one comfortable setting, and reduce the louder file using its clip or track gain. Do not boost the quieter file just to meet the other one. Play only one version at a time and switch between the same phrase. Avoid comparing files in two apps with different volume, normalization, or enhancement settings.
Use the measured gap for an initial reduction, then adjust in small steps until neither version seems consistently louder. Listen to the body of the phrase, not just a snare hit or a single bass note. A compressed version may feel louder in a quiet verse but similar in the chorus. Recheck the match for each test passage rather than assuming one adjustment settles the entire song.
Peak normalization alone is not a listening-level match: files can have the same highest sample but different average levels. Identical volume-slider positions do not match unequal sources, either. Keep temporary listening gain separate from final export settings.
Try this hypothetical comparison
Suppose matching chorus excerpts read -18 dBFS for A and -14 dBFS for B. B measures 4 dB higher, so start by reducing B's playback gain by 4 dB in the editor. Listen again and refine the match by ear. These are invented example values, not recommended mix levels or measurements from a SongSprig track.
Your question is whether B makes the last word of each chorus line easier to hear. Listen to that word, then check the cymbal underneath it and the kick at the next phrase. If B helps the word but makes the cymbal distracting, record both observations. The next edit should address that tradeoff, not simply turn B back up until it feels exciting again.

Listen in three short passes
- First, check the stated goal. Can you identify the change at matched levels without looking at the filename?
- Next, check what suffered. Listen for masked words, smeared drum attacks, rough high notes, or bass that hides its own rhythm.
- Finally, play the choice in context. Include the move into the chorus and the following section; an isolated improvement can disturb the song's flow.
Keep comparisons short enough to remember the detail. Reverse the playback order for another pass. If your preference keeps changing, take a break and record uncertainty. When checking a clear choice on another playback device, match the levels there again.
Do not let the charts choose the mix
Music Analyzer's energy timeline scales each file relative to its own strongest bucket. Similar-height bars across two reports do not prove equal loudness. Low, Mid, and High percentages describe the tool's sampled frequency balance; they are not a target recipe to copy. A dynamics label is also a rough description, not a quality score. Use a reading to decide where to listen, then name the audible issue before changing the mix.
Before you keep a version
- Both excerpts cover comparable music, with matching boundaries for a controlled mix test.
- Playback is matched by ear, and only one version plays at a time.
- The chosen version answers the original question without a more serious tradeoff.
- You have checked a busy passage, an exposed passage, and the transition between sections.
- Original files are intact, and temporary listening gain is documented separately.
- Your note explains the choice with an audible detail, or honestly records no clear improvement.
